Colistin sulfate, also known as Coly-Mycin S, is a potent cyclic polypeptide antibiotic primarily produced by Bacillus polymyxa. It is a complex mixture of at least 30 components, with colistins A and B being the major ones. Chemically, it is a polypeptide with colistin A differing from polymyxin B by the substitution of D-leucine for D-phenylalanine in the cyclic portion of the structure. Colistin sulfate is a white or almost white, hygroscopic powder and is available in sulfate and methanesulfonate forms.
