Appearance: A White CRYSTALLINE powder
Therapeutic Function |
Antibacterial |
Safety Profile |
Moderately toxic. An experimental teratogen. Other experimental reproductive effects. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of SOx and NOx. |
Definition |
ChEBI: A hydrate that is the trihydrate form of amoxicillin; a semisynthetic antibiotic, used either alone or in combination with potassium clavulanate (under the trade name Augmentin) for treatment of a variety of bacterial infections. |
Uses | Amoxicillin sodium is very hygroscopic in nature, while trihydrate is non-hygroscopic. Among free base, sodium salt, and trihydrate, amoxycillin trihydrate is the most stable solid form [14]. Still, amoxicillin trihydrate is sensitive to temperature and humidity. It also shows degradation in alcohol and polyols. |

Amoxicillin trihydrate, now used in pharmaceutical formulations, is significantly more stable than sodium amoxicillin. It degrades according to Prout-Tompkins model. We studied the stability of amoxicillin at temperatures of 37°, 50°, 80°, 90°, 100° y 110° C. HPLC was chosen as the analytical method. Amoxicillin and its decomposition products are separated by reversed-phase (C18) HPLC with gradient elution.

Twenty five randomly selected patients (study group) were administered two grams oral dose of amoxicillin trihydrate, one hour prior to the procedure. Twenty five patients (control group) were not administered any antibiotic prior to the procedure.
